1972 GTO HT
This was the last year for a high performance engine option in the GTO, the 455HO. 635 were built. Ram Air (as shown below) as only available with the 455HO option and was the most efficient on any GTO. This great engine has 4 bolt mains, big port heads with round exhaust flanges, alum 2 piece intake, ram air exhaust manifolds, etc. The ultimate GTO option was the WW5 package. Offered only this year. It was pricey and thus, made it rare but, it grouped all desirable performance options together- this WW5 option included- 455HO engine, Ram Air, unitized ignition, rally gauges, tachometer, Formula steering wheel, painted sport mirrors, 12 bolt HD positraction axle, HD automatic or M-22 4speed trans, HD suspension with 1 1/8" sway bars front and rear, 15x7" rally II wheels on G-60-15 tires. This option alone averaged $1,000 over the course of the year. Only 290 buyers opted to order the WW5 making a WW5 '72 among the most desireable ever. Car shown below is a real WW5.

GTO GTO sedan
Pontiac brought back the GTO as a sedan with vent windows and door post as an attempt to lower the price and make the car more affordable. The public did not respond and , as a result, the '72 GTO sedans are the rarest of all the GTOs.
Changes were modest for this year. 72's have recessed grilles (ALL grilles were metal silver color not black) and "bomb site" park lamp trim added, Air extractor or vent added to fenders GTO decal moved to quarter panel. GTOs had rear side splitter exhaust
